John Scott’s SEO test is being challenged

Mike Dammann at 4:51 am on Saturday, December 31, 2005

by Greg Boser and a few others. This Web Guerilla entry is being used to announce that he himself is copycatting this to start his very own contest as well.

This is getting headlines all over the seo world.
Thread Watch and SE Roundtable are fairly neutral in the matter. I myself have decided to stick with the original rather than support a copier who wants people to link to Matt Cutts’ blog as a requirement to enter the competition (suck up).

Here is the original post about the v7n seo contest for those who haven’t seen it.

So what do you guys think about what Greg Boser is doing?

Cmon - Greg is not a suck up for asking people to link to Matt’s blog? Some people just don’t seem to get the joke here. Matt is a Google egineer who preaches against this type of paid for, manipulated link. Asking people to link to Matt’s blog is a joke, a bit of SEO irony if you will. If you think he is doing that to “suck up” you clearly don’t understand the relationship between Matt and Greg.

I think that running an SEO contest is a great idea but the “require a link back” schtick is tired. Greg called John out on it, big deal. A link back, js, nofollow or whatever would taint the true test anyway. Google would aboviously see this as some sort of linking scheme, or unatural linking structure.

I have no problem with what John is doing (it is his money and contest) and I have no problem with Greg’s response.

If Greg he wants to do a copycat contest, that’s pretty much his right. However how he is doing it is cheep and vindictive. he obviously has some grudge against John.

I don’t know either parties, I just heard of Johns contest a few days ago. But John is holding a contest that like most contests will give some benefit to the person footing the bill (John in this case). No ones hurt, participate if you want.

Greg on the otherhand is trying to make himself look good by stomping on someone else. Personally I wouldn’t even consider being part of Greg’s Contest.

Kris Farmer,

We never have required a search engine indexable link.

And I have never heard of an SEO contest where they required a link that wasn’t search engine indexable, so how could “that schtick” be tired?

Cheers

John

[…] Well, anyway, I hate suck-ups, too! Birds of a feather, I suppose. This suck-up is probably the biggest “wannabe” suck-up that I’ve EVER seen, though. Bigger than Greg, even. What the hell does he think he’s going to get by sending a bunch of money to Matt? Respect? NOT! […]
