Motivation - Un Underestimated Asset

One thing that webmasters forget is that if you are at the core of a website or blog, you need to be motivated - everyday.

Yes SEO, link development, and traffic are all important and I am in no way trying to diminish the methods that webmaster’s use to get a website out there, but we often overlook how much the author’s motivation plays a role in a website.

This is especially true if you have a blog and/or post daily. When you are motivated you need to display that in the way you write.

It’s kind of like smiling on the phone; your voice reflects that smile, though no one can see it.

When a visitor comes to your site and reads content you may want him to feel intrigued, informed, or happy after reading your content.

The last thing you want is a bored visitor. If your websites content sounds boring, depressing or monotonous the visitor will sense that and leave.

What Can You Do?

  1. When working on your site think of your visitors. What will I be telling them today that is important/funny/interesting. Write with that sense.
  2. When writing content be expressive. Don’t hold back on expressing your emotions.

For example, don’t say: “The cell phone looks good.” Instead say, “What I like about the cell phone was its sleekness and stylish colors.”

    or

Instead of saying,” This video is so funny.” say: “When he got hit in the crotch, I spit out my coffee all over the screen.” (be honest).

  3. Don’t get depressed when you receive bad comments about your site. It’s bound too happen.
  4. Don’t be flattered by good comments either. Bask in the sun for a short while. but watch out - too much motivation can cause you to do make some stupid decisions.
  5. Think positive. Think fresh. Think new.
  6. Be the visitor. What would he find fun and fresh? What would feel fresh from the other side of the screen?
  7. Most of all have fun! If you are bored about your site, chances are so is your visitor.

Motivation is kind of like alcohol: It’s good in moderation, but too much will make you do stupid things.

For a website, this could mean making dumb decisions like writing something stupid or doing something that ruins the site’s reputation.

So, have fun with your site. Be fresh, be new, and be daring. Don’t get depressed when people dislike your content.

Each day is fresh. Write with that same freshness and your visitors will be able to sense that motivation in what they read.

Good advice. I tend to be of the same mindset when writing for my site. Especially tutorials. Others shun saying anything but how to do what the tutorial is meant to teach. But I like to have fun with it and find often users can get bored during a tutorial and lose interest.
